People and Community

The Social Value actions we implement strongly focus on our people and the communities we work with.  These concentrate on our working culture, the support we can provide to employees to enhance their wellbeing, and our targeted focus on Fairness, Inclusion and Respect.

Employee Wellbeing and Engagement

We prioritise the wellbeing of our workforce and strive to ensure our people are both healthy and engaged whether on-site, in the office or working remotely.  We regularly seek feedback from our employees via surveys and ask for their suggestions as to what we can improve or do differently to enhance the working environment.

Mental Health First Aiders

We recognise the importance of Mental Health in our people and are committed to providing support.  We have four members of staff trained as Mental Health First Aiders who have the ability to spot the signs and respond to the mental and physical health needs of a person experiencing a mental health issue.

Hybrid Working

Based on the feedback we received, we now offer a hybrid working pattern for our office-based employees, enabling them to split their working week between days working from home and days working in the office, in line with business requirements.  Our internal business communication technology allows our employees to stay connected and work collaboratively no matter where they are.

Fairness, Inclusion and Respect (FIR)

We are aligned with the Sustainability Supply School Chains industry-wide FIR initiative that is making workplaces better for everyone.  The FIR programme promotes the principles of equality, diversity and inclusion, and importantly works to ensure everyone is treated fairly and with respect within a business.  We have three employees trained as FIR Ambassadors to promote and embed principles of FIR within the working culture, whilst also liaising and sharing ideas with other companies within the industry to impact change on a wider scale.

Internships and Placements

We have a passion to engage with Universities in the West Midlands, such as the University of Birmingham, to offer 3-, 6- or 12-month internships within the business.  These offer students the opportunity to gain real hands-on experience by applying their theoretical knowledge to a real working environment, whilst building their business skills ready to kick start their careers when they graduate.

Apprenticeships

We recognise the challenge for people in the local community when they want to study and develop a career but find it difficult to finance this when not employed.  An apprenticeship offers an individual the opportunity to be employed on full time basis but spend 20% of their paid working time studying with a recognised training provider.  We have previously offered several Level 3 Apprenticeships across the business in areas of Electrical Engineering and Technical Support, working with the Birmingham Metropolitan College, Colchester Institute and Weymouth college.  We have also offered higher degree level apprenticeships to existing staff to allow them to complete these qualifications through SE Controls via Aston University.

Training and Development

Development of our employees is at the top of our agenda, to not only ensure we have competent people across all areas, but also to develop their skills to ensure they can progress in their chosen career page.  We have a dedicated internal Learning and Development professional, responsible for both sourcing external professional or technical qualifications and developing/delivering internal management or soft skill training to support the whole workforce in their continual development.
